Parents For Safe Technology

“None of the radiofrequency radiation exposure guidelines take pregnant women, fetuses, and the elderly into consideration!  RF exposure limits for the general public should be lowered to protect all those more vulnerable to electromagnetic fields"

The “International EMF Scientist Appeal” asks the Secretary General and UN affiliated bodies to encourage precautionary measures, to limit EMF exposures, and to educate the public about health risks, particularly to children and pregnant women.

Should anyone state "Doctor's say WiFi is safe." Please share this list with them.

Medical Organization's Recommend Taking Precautions Now

Thousands of Medical Doctors (literally) have signed onto declarations and issued position statements calling for reduced exposures on children and for governments to act to protect children.

The Precautionary Principle: When the health of humans and the environment is at stake it is not necessary to wait for scientific certainty to take protective action.

What Do Medical Organizations State about Wireless Radiation?

The American Academy of Pediatrics

"The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), part of the United Nations’ World Health Organization, said in June 2011 that a family of frequencies that includes mobile-phone emissions is “possibly carcinogenic to humans.” ...These studies and others clearly demonstrate the need for further research into this area and highlight the importance of reassessing current policy to determine if it is adequately protective of human health.”

-Dr. Thomas K. McInerny, President  of the American Academy of Pediatrics , in the
AAP  Submission to the FCC on August 29, 2013 calling for more protective wireless radiation guidelines in the USA.

California Medical Association  (CMA)

Passed Resolution: House of Delegates Resolution Wireless Standards Reevaluation 2014

  • The CMA understands that  existing public safety limits for microwave EMF devices are outdated and inadequate to protect public health  thus endorses efforts of the Federal Communications Commission to reevaluate its safety standards to include consideration of adverse non thermal biologic and health effects from non ionizing electromagnetic radiation used in wireless communications"
  • Whereas peer reviewed research has demonstrated adverse biological effects of wireless EMF including single and double stranded DNA breaks, creation of reactive oxygen species, immune dysfunction, cognitive processing effects, stress protein synthesis in the brain, altered brain development, sleep and memory disturbances, ADHD, abnormal behavior, sperm dysfunction, and brain tumors.

Press Release announcing International EMF Scientist Appeal (May 11, 2015)
Description of International EMF Scientist Appeal

The World Health Organization

The World Health Organization has classified the radiation cell towers emit as a Class 2 B  Possible Human Carcinogen based on increased brain cancer rates... and has a super long list of research needing to be done. Read it here. Read the summary page here
The World Health Organization cites the study, “Exposure Limits: The underestimation of absorbed cell phone radiation, especially in children,” (Gandhi et al, 2011), which documents how the industry-designed process for evaluating microwave radiation from phones results in children absorbing twice the cell phone radiation to their heads, up to triple in their brain’s hippocampus and hypothalamus, greater absorption in their eyes, and as much as 10 times more in their bone marrow when compared to adults.

Q: Was the WHO referring to Cell phones only?
A: No. The carcinogenic classification applies to radio frequency radiation, from any device. Dr. Robert Baan of the International Agency for the Research on Cancer of the  WHO has stated- this classification 2B, possibly carcinogenic, is not limited to cellphone radiation, it “holds for all types of radiation within the radiofrequency part of the electromagnetic spectrum, including the radiation emitted by base-station antennas (that means cell towers) , radio/TV towers, radar, Wi-Fi, smart meters, etc."

Environment and Human Health Inc.

 This group issued the THE CELL PHONE REPORT: TECHNOLOGY EXPOSURES, HEALTH EFFECTS.

John Wargo, Ph.D., professor of Environmental Risk and Policy at Yale University and lead author of the report, said, “The scientific evidence is sufficiently robust showing that cellular devices pose significant health risks to children and pregnant women. The weight of the evidence supports stronger precautionary regulation by the federal government. The cellular industry should take immediate steps to reduce emission of electromagnetic radiation (EMR) from phones and avoid marketing their products to children.”

  • Recommendations to the Federal Government: Set exposure standards to protect human health.
  • Recommendations to Individuals: Reduce your exposure to wireless radiation sources.

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe

Resolution 1815:  In 2011 The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe issued The Potential Dangers of Electromagnetic Fields and Their Effect on the Environment. A call to European governments to

  • “take all reasonable measures” to reduce exposure to electromagnetic fields “particularly the exposure to children and young people who seem to be most at risk from head tumours.”

  • The Resolution calls for  member states to:Implement “information campaigns about the risk of biological effects on the environment and human health, especially targeting children and young people of reproductive age."

  • “Reconsider the scientific basis for the present standards on exposure to electromagnetic fields set by the International Commission on Non-Ionising Radiation Protection, which have serious limitations, and apply ALARA principles, covering both thermal effects and the a thermic or biological effects of electromagnetic emissions or radiation.”

The Seletun Scientific Panel- A group of international scientists from 5 countries

" Low-intensity (non-thermal) bioeffects and adverse health effects are demonstrated at levels significantly below existing exposure standards for telecommunications and power utility technologies in developed and developing countries. ICNIRP and IEEE/FCC public safety limits are inadequate and obsolete with respect to prolonged, low-intensity exposures common today. New, biologically-based public exposure standards are urgently needed to protect public health world-wide."

Vienna Medical Association

"The microwave radiation given off by cell or mobile phones is possibly not as safe as cell phone providers would like us to believe. Therefore the Vienna Medical Association has decided to show responsibility and inform the people of Austria about the potential negative effects of cell phone radiation from a medical perspective."

The Association has several recommendations including "Children and teenagers under the age of 16 should never use a cell phone at all" and "Wireless LAN also leads to high microwave exposure".

"Wi-Fi environments will lead to high microwave exposure for students and teachers which might increase the burden of oxidative stress. Oxidative stress might slow down the energy production especially in brain cells and may lead e.g. to concentration difficulties and memory problems in certain individuals. The Austrian Medical Association recommends Wi-Fi free school environments. "

U. S. President’s Cancer Panel

The 2009 U.S. President’s Cancer Panel pointed to cell phones and other wireless technologies as potential causes of cancer. In its recommendations, the panel stated:

“Also, incidence of brain cancer, particularly glioma, and other types of cancer has increased concomitantly with use of cell phones and other modes of wireless communication. Although not all of the data are conclusive, this area should receive attention from the U.S. Government.”  The panel recommended that people reduce their usage by making fewer and shorter calls, using hands-free devices so that the phone is not against the head, and refraining from keeping a phone cket.
“Even if cell phones raise the risk of cancer slightly, so many people are exposed that it could be a large public health burden.” – Dr. Ted Schettler, Director of the Science and Environmental Health Network.

53 Canadian Physicians

"Out of sincere concern for the health of Canadians at all stages of life – from the developing fetus through childhood and into adulthood – we respectfully request that:

i) Health Canada develop and support strategies to raise awareness about microwave radiation impacts and to minimize prolonged exposure to microwave radiation in schools and other places where children are regularly exposed."

The International Congress of Potenza Picena

"Radiofrequency can cause structural changes in enzymes with time reactions of nanoseconds,while the pulsed radiofrequencies emitted by radars occur every milliseconds, thus suggesting that for every pulsing event several enzymatic changes occur...RF sources should be kept far from residential areas. For pulsed RF sources, such radars andWi-Max antennas, the distance from the EMF source should be even greater because they causemore biologically effects than non pulsed signals"

Potenza Picena Resolution 2011

International Group of Doctors and Scientists to Canada 2014

"Epidemiological studies show links between RF exposure and cancers, neurological disorders, hormonal changes, symptoms of electrical hypersensitivity (EHS) and more. Laboratory studies show increased cancers, abnormal sperm, learning and memory deficits, and heart irregularities.

Our urgent call for public health protection: The public’s health and the health of the environment are threatened by ever-evolving RF emitting technologies, without due consideration for what the potential cumulative impacts on biological systems are likely to be in the future."
-Scientific Declaration to Health Canada 2014

The BioInitiative Report

"Existing public safety limits (FCC and ICNIRP public safety limits) do not sufficiently protect public health against chronic exposure from very low-intensity exposures...We have the knowledge and means to save global populations from multi-generational adverse healthconsequences by reducing both ELF and RFR exposures. Proactive and immediate measures to reduce unnecessary EMF exposures will lower disease burden and rates of premature death."

The BioInitiative 2012 Report was prepared by 29 authors from ten countries, ten holding medical degrees (MDs), 21 PhDs, and three MsC, MA or MPHs. It documents more than 1800 research studies and warns that young children, parents to be, and pregnant women are particularly vulnerable to the associated health risks.

British Medical Doctors
"We urge health agencies and the public to act immediately to reduce exposure to radiofrequency/ microwave radiation. This is especially important for children, who are physiologically more vulnerable to this exposure, and for whom adults have a safeguarding responsibility. Children’s health should be put ahead of convenience and commercial benefits."

  • "The epidemiological studies of men assessed for infertility were consistent in demonstrating decreased sperm motility associated with increased use of mobile phones" and "biological effects on sperm motility related to RF Exposure";
  • "Oxidative stress seems one of the more plausible mechanisms of RF-induced sperm damage. It has been found fairly consistently in human and animal studies on sperm specifically and on other cells in general. Mechanisms by which oxidative stress is caused by increased ROS and decreased antioxidant have been shown to exist in neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s";
  • "Given that the balance of evidence is for some adverse effect, even if that effect cannot yet be precisely defined, it seems reasonable to proceed with caution. A recommendation is that short-term personal exposure for males be reduced by keeping mobile phones away from their genital area (i.e., not in pants pockets) and limiting mobile phone use";
  • "provocation studies are limited to examining acute (short-term) exposure to RF, and acute symptoms and the effects of cumulative, chronic exposure to RF on persistent human health symptoms have not been studied thoroughly."

Scientists of the the Porto Alegre Resolution

"We agreed that the protection of health, well-being and the environment requires immediate adoption of the Precautionary Principle, which states, "when there are indications of possible adverse effects, though they remain uncertain, the risks from doing nothing may be far greater than the risks of taking action to control these exposures. The Precautionary Principle shifts the burden of proof from those suspecting a risk to those who discount it", until new scientific discoveries are recognized as the only criterion for the establishment or modification of non-ionizing radiation exposure standards;"

-Porto Alegre Resolution 2009

Scientists of the Venice Resolution

"The non-ionizing radiation protection standards recommended by international standards organizations, and supported by the World Health Organization, are inadequate. Existing guidelines are based on results from acute exposure studies and only thermal effects are considered. A world wide application of the Precautionary Principle is required. "

-Venice Resolution 2008

Benevento Resolution

We encourage governments to adopt a framework of guidelines for public and occupational EMF exposure that reflect the Precautionary Principle2 -- as some nations have already done. ... These strategies should include:

  • Promote alternatives to wireless communication systems, e.g., use of fiber optics and coaxial cables; design cellular phones that meet safer performance specifications, including radiating away from the head; preserve existing land line phone networks; place power lines underground in the vicinity of populated areas, only siting them in residential neighborhoods as a last resort;

"Dear Member of the European Parliament, We, undersigned physicians and researchers, feel great concern about the Precautionary Principle not being sufficiently applied to the electromagnetic fields, especially in the radio- and microwave frequency bands.'

Helsinki Appeal 2005

Freiburger Appeal 2002

"One can no longer evade these pulsed microwaves. They heighten the risk of already-present chemical/physical influences, stress the body's immune system, and can bring the body's still-functioning regulatory mechanisms to a halt. Pregnant women, children, adolescents, elderly and sick people are especially at risk."
